Overview

The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid-Tropics (ICRISAT) is seeking applications for a Scientific Officer – Remote Sensing to support the conception and operational deployment of EO services in West Africa, in partnership with public and private partners. These activities are undertaken as part of the SERVIR initiative in West Africa (SERVIR WA phase 2: 2022-2027). The Scientific Officer's work location will be in Niamey, Niger and s/he will be reporting to the SERVIR West Africa Science and Data Lead at ICRISAT.



Primary Responsibilities:

  • Help deploy and improve EO workflows, particularly in technical aspects of data procurement, curation, pre-processing, post-processing, uncertainty estimation, interoperability and quality of service
  • Analyze and understand different types of remote sensing data needed for different types of services, and enhance capacity in the use of artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud resources and incorporation of innovations and emergent promising methodologies in service workflows
  • Ensure compliance with open science and open data principles, and scientific rigor in the development of EO-based services
  • Facilitate interactions between regional partners and the NASA Science Coordination Office (SCO) and Applied Sciences Team (AST), and the provision of subject matter expertise (SME) for science and data aspects of service development
  • Assist the project team in communicating SERVIR West Africa research results within ICRISAT, CGIAR, NASA and to external audiences, including the preparation of peer-reviewed and public awareness material

Key Skills

  • Strong computational capability (working knowledge of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cloud computing),
  • Bilingual in English and French (good verbal and written communication skills required in both languages),
  • Strong social and inter-personal skills, and a results-oriented personality

Additional/Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Quality of Service (QoS), Open Science and Open Data principles, and West Africa an advantage,
  • Interest and ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • MSc in applied mathematics, computer science, remote sensing, or agricultural/environmental sciences
